New OverDrive Media Console Software for Windows Users

If you, like me!, have been ignoring the prompts to update the OverDrive Media Console software on your Windows computer, you must update the software before downloading your next MP3 audiobook to your Windows computer. But, no fear, the update is easy with these tricks:

Note: This does not affect patrons who use the OverDrive mobile app on their phones or tablets. Nor does it appear to affect Mac users. This is only for users who wish to download to their Windows computer and transfer the audiobook to their mobile device.

  • All Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10 users must use the "Windows Desktop" version (dark blue button) in order to download audiobooks to a computer.
  • I installed the new version on top of my existing software, meaning I did not have to uninstall the current version of the OverDrive Media Console.
  • If you notice that the software looks radically different, you might have accidentally installed the Windows 8/10 version of the software. The Windows for Desktop software looks identical to the version you have been using.
  • One patron reports having trouble transferring the audiobook to an Apple device. Consider adding the audiobook files to iTunes and transferring the audiobook by syncing the device with iTunes. These instructions go into detail on how to add an audiobook to iTunes and transfer to an iPhone or other Apple device.

I hope this information is helpful! Contact your local librarian for more assistance.
