Resume Playback Feature for the Sansa Clip or Sansa Fuze

~~The firmware update to a Sansa Clip allows for a "resume playback" feature when audiobooks are transferred to the "Audiobooks" folder.~~ New Sansa Clips and Sansa Fuzes have an Audiobooks folder. When the audiobook is transferred from the OverDrive Media Console to that special Audiobooks folder (instead of into the Music folder), the resume playback feature will hold your last known locations for that audiobook part. Here are the instructions to add OverDrive audiobooks to the correct folder to enable this feature.

There is no need to create an Audiobooks folder on your device; the firmware update has done this for you. (This was my first mistake.)
Did you give the update some time to take effect? (Another mistake of mine...)
Checkout and download a book to your computer like normal.
Open OverDrive Media Console, if necessary.
Select the desired audiobook.
Plug in your player.
Wait a minute to let Windows recognize your player.
Click the transfer button.
A dialog box will open showing the name of the audibook.
Click "next."
On the dialog box that shows the parts of the audiobook, click on the "Advanced Options..." button.
You may be asked if you wish to create a new folder for the title. Click "no."
A new "Advanced Options" dialog box loads. From this box, click on "Browse."
Choose "Audiobooks" instead of "Music." Create a new folder, if desired, and name it the title of your audiobook.
Notice that the path in the Advanced Options dialog box has changed to "Audiobooks/[title of audiobook folder]"
Click "Ok."
Click "Next" to start the transfer.
The book will transfer as normal.
You'll be prompted to unplug your player.
Unplug.
Turn on your device.
You'll find the audiobooks under: Music >> Audiobooks >> Title.
When you return to a title that you'd previously listened to, you'll see a menu item "Resume Playback." Choose that option to continue with the audiobook.

Penguin Titles in Kindle Format Not Available for iOS Devices

As mentioned previously, Kindle Books published by Penguin can no longer be transferred wirelessly to a Kindle or Kindle app. Instead, the Penguin-published Kindle Book must be downloaded to a computer and transferred to the Kindle device. But what about the Kindle apps on your mobile devices? I have an iPhone and wanted to know if I could download a Kindle Book published by Penguin to my computer and transfer it via USB cable to my phone. Did it work? Not that I could figure out! Here's what I did:

After checking out a Penguin-published Kindle Book, I took steps to download it to my computer. Along the way I had to select which Kindle I planned to read the book on. Unfortunately, I could not select a Kindle app, only a Kindle device. I suspected this would cause problems, but, nonetheless, I carried on.

I connected my iPhone to my Mac and let iTunes open and sync the device. I clicked on the iPhone from the left sidebar and scrolled down the main iPhone screen to "File Sharing." I loaded the Kindle file recently downloaded to my computer to the Kindle app and synced the device.

After syncing, it appeared that the file successfully transferred to the Kindle app on my iPhone. But when I tried to open it I received the following error message:

Please remove the book from your device and redownload it from your archived items. If the problem persists, try to deregister your application and register it again.

The other Kindle books are working fine on the app. I suspect this error is coming about because the title cannot be registered to this particular device. When I downloaded the file from the Amazon site, it asked which Kindle I wanted to put the title on. I could not choose any of the apps registered to my account, only the Kindle devices.

At this time, I recommend checking out the EPUB version of Penguin titles and downloading directly to the OverDrive Media Console on your mobile device or emailing and opening the file on the Bluefire Reader (my EPUB app of choice in Apple devices thanks to better eBook formatting).

Changes to Kindle Lending from Penguin

In order to read the Penguin titles on your Kindle, you will need to download the title to your computer and use the USB cable to transfer the title to your Kindle.

Browse and check out a Kindle Book. If you see the notice that the notice about "...via USB only," follow these instructions.

When you get to this page, click the "Get for Kindle" button the same as always.

A new tab will open. If you are not already logged into the Amazon site, you may see a similar screen. I couldn't figure out how to sign in AND keep my library loan.

So instead, I logged into Amazon, closed the tab, and went back to the nh.lib.overdrive.com tab and clicked on the "Get for Kindle" button again. This time the site gave me an option to download the title.

Select the device you want to read the book on.

The file will download to the default download location. The browser you use and the download settings saved in your browser matter! Since I'm using Chrome right now, the file showed up at the bottom of my screen. It was ultimately saved to my desktop (my default download location).

Plug your Kindle device into your computer. Browse for the following folder using Windows Explorer (Windows) or the Finder (Mac).

I found the Kindle Book file on my desktop and dragged it into the Documents folder of my USB-connected Kindle.

Safely disconnect the Kindle from your computer and view the Kindle's home screen to see the library loan.

Resending a Kindle Book to Your Device

What happens if you check out a Kindle book but need to resend the book to your device or app? If you log into our NHDB site, visit your account and currently checked out items, it looks like you'll be able to "Get Kindle" again, but instead you might see this:

But no fear! Resending the item to your device or app can be done through the Manage Your Kindle link.

Find the public library loan, click the "Actions" button and deliver the book to your preferred device or app.

These steps can be taken from a computer or an iPad. They *might still* be taken from a Kindle Fire, but I have not verified this.

Using Your iPad with NHDB

This is the first part of (hopefully?) two or more planned parts to using an iPad with the NH Downloadable Books service. I'm playing around with eventually creating an iPad-friendly document -- but right now it's just a bunch of screenshots in PDF format. So why disseminate it now? Because I've heard from so many librarians this week about the high demand for any information about eBooks!

Installing the OverDrive Media Console on the Kindle Fire (UPDATE)

-- The newest version of the Kindle Fire software (6.2.1) may or may not allow you to install the OMC on the Kindle Fire. When I get the newest software update I'll work with this again.--

Why would you want to install the OverDrive Media Console (OMC) on your Kindle Fire when it already handles Kindle books loans from the library?

The OMC will also allow you to check out EPUB titles (not all of our eBooks are available in Kindle format right away) and download MP3 audiobooks to the Fire -- all from the Fire's mobile browser.

Here's how to get started: (Kindle Fire Software Version 6.2 ONLY)

First, the Kindle Fire is essentially an Android tablet with an Amazon wrapper to it. However, the tablet is a little more limited than other Android devices in that it does not have access to the Android Market where most apps can be found. Instead you'll have to get the app directly from OverDrive. Because the app is being obtained from somewhere other than the built in Amazon app store, you'll need to change an important setting (at least temporarily).

Allow Installations from Unknown Sources:

Tap the small "Settings" button in the upper-right corner of the Fire's touch screen. (It looks like a little cog.)
Tap "More."
Tap "Device."
Turn "on" the "Allow Installation of Applications From Unknown Sources." (The "on" should be in orange now.)

Perfect, without having that setting changed you wouldn't be able to download the app from OverDrive.

Visit the OverDrive Website:

http://overdrive.com/Software/omc/

Once there, select "Android" and look towards the bottom of the page to see the following link.

Click on the link and start downloading the app.
You'll notice a small "1" in the upper-left corner of your Fire's touch screen right next to [your name's] Fire.
Tap on that "1" to see the app's progress downloading.
Once it has finished downloading and installing, open the app.
Yea!

Notes:

To read EPUB eBooks you'll need to register for a free Adobe ID (http://adobe.com) and authorize the OMC app with that email address and password. To find the Adobe registration area on the Fire, tap the small menu button at the bottom-center of the Fire's touch screen >> App Settings.
You'll use the Fire's web browser to visit the NHDB website (http://nh.lib.overdrive.com), log into your account, checkout an EPUB eBook or MP3 audiobook. Tap the "Download" button once the title is checked out and the app will take over.
You cannot use WMA audiobooks with the Kindle Fire. The WMA audiobooks have DRM (security) developed by Microsoft. The DRM requires Windows Media Player to unlock the security. There is no WMP on the Fire.
The EPUB eBook will expire in 14 days. The title can be returned early from the app itself.
The MP3 audiobooks expire in 7 days. The title will not be playable on the OMC app after 7 days. Audiobooks cannot be returned early.

How to return the EPUB eBook early on the Fire's OverDrive Media Console:

From the "Home" screen of the Fire's OMC app (the one where you see all of the titles listed...)
Tap and press on the title until a new menu pops up.
Tap "Delete."
Tap "Return Then Delete."
That's all. The title will be returned to the collection and your account freed up for another eBook.

Connecting to a Wireless Network with the Kindle Touch

The Kindle Touch comes in two different models:

The Kindle Touch includes only wireless internet access.
The Kindle Touch 3G includes both wireless internet AND cellular internet access.

Why is this important to know?

When purchasing eBooks from Amazon, users are able to download their purchases via a local wireless network or through the cellular service built into their Kindle Touch 3G device. However, when downloading an eBook from our NHDB service, the user can only use a local wireless network to make the transfer. (Amazon doesn't pay for its customers to get free library eBooks delivered through the cellular service Amazon pays for.)

If you have a Kindle with only wireless access, simply turn on the wireless settings to download your library loan:

Turn on the device. The power button is at the bottom of the device.
From the home screen (which lists your titles), tap the "Menu" button at the upper-right of the touch screen.
From the new menu that overlays the screen, tap "Turn on Wireless."
To see the available networks, tap on "Menu" again (if the menu disappeared) and then on "Wi-Fi Networks."
If this is the first time connecting to the local wireless network, the device with take a moment to scan and access the available wireless networks.
Tap on the desired network.
If a password is required, you'll be given the opportunity to enter it now.
If a special Wi-Fi security protocol is required, select the "Advanced" button to select the type of protocol. (This is the WPA, WPA2, WEP, etc.)

Connect to the local wireless network with a Kindle Touch 3G:

From the Home screen...
Tap the "Menu" button.
Tap "Settings"
Tap "Wi-Fi Networks."
Wait a moment for the device to scan for local wireless networks...
Tap the network you wish to join.
Enter a password, if necessary.

Turning off the wireless:

It's always helpful to shut off the wireless on your Kindle once you've finished the transfer. This is extend the time needed between charges.

To shut off the wireless, tap the "Menu" button >> "Turn Off Wireless."
